The results of the influence of diffusion boriding on durability of the agricultural tools used in
the soil were presented. Field tests of durability of the tools were conducted in the soil class III and
IV. The degree of wear of the tools using optical scanner and a method of mass loss were evaluated.
The boronizing layers were made by the gas-contact method with the so-called open retort.
Thickness and hardness of the boronizing layers were investigated. The produced layers were
characterized by a coniferous and a two-phase structure composed of iron borides FeB zone at the
surface and Fe2B in the core.
It was shown that the hardness of the boronizing layers is about 2000 HV0,05, and the thickness
is 200 microns.
It was found that the durability of diffusion boriding tools increased comparing to traditionally
processed tools.
