This paper concerns numerical analysis of thermal phenomena in lap joint made of high
strength steel welded by a laser beam. Temperature field was obtained basing on the solution into
energy conservation equation with Fourier law, using finite element method in ABAQUS FEA.
Laser beam heat source power distribution was described by cylindrical-involution-normal model.
Heat source movement was modelled using DFLUX subroutine. Thermo-physical parameters
varying with temperature as well as latent heat of fusion with assumed linear approximation of
solid fraction in the mushy zone were taken into account in calculations. The shape and size of the
weld and heat affected zone were numerically estimated.
