The research of gray iron surface layer creation by laser heat treatment are the issue of this article.
The aim of this research was gray iron types analysis. The influence of their microstructure
on surface layer character created by laser heat treatment was principally studied. The results of
theoretical analysis allow to state that particular differences should appear between laser heat
treatment effects in ferrite flake iron and ferrite-pearlite, pearlite and metastable nodular iron. So,
in the surface layer of those nodular iron types higher temperature should be expected during laser
treatment. As a consequence larger should be range of the changes created by laser heat treatment.
Moreover, it was stated that influence on physical properties of graphite shape is much more important
than type of cast iron matrix. The practical verification (laser heat treatment of chosen cast
irons) confirmed theoretical results. Significant role of laser radiation absorbing layer in cast iron
treatment was also showed.
